What is coaching?
What coaching is has shifted from primarily being a tool for bridging gaps and correcting behavior, to being a tool for taking individuals to the next level in their professional performance, leadership, career, relationships and personal life. The process is a ‘real-time’, experience-based learning model, which focuses on the present and the future rather than the past. It focuses in on identified areas and aspects of the individual’s life where he/she is lacking fulfillment, balance and/or success. Coaching also involves goal-setting and customized route mapping on how to best achieve those goals, based on the individual and his/her values, skills, strengths and weaknesses.
Who should utilize coaching?
Anyone and everyone can benefit from coaching. Those who can best take advantage of coaching are highly motivated individuals who strive to grow, develop and become their best self (on a personal and professional level).
Coaching can also be an effective tool to use when gaps have been identified, for example in the areas of performance, leadership or challenges in ability to formulate a plan and reach goals, interpersonal relationships and communication, happiness, balance, etc., to name a few.
For coaching to work to its fullest capability, it is essential that the individual is open to the process and motivated to actively engage with it. Depending on the goals outlined, an internal support structure is also of high importance if the coaching is applied in a work setting.
What is the cost of a life coach?
In general, the cost of a life coach will vary greatly depending on his or her experience and area of expertise.
LifeCoachMTL Coaching offers different cost options depending on duration and frequency of meetings.
The initial Discovery session is around 90 min and a one time cost. The following coaching sessions’ are as per agreement, usually 60 mins. Face-to-face, or phone/Skype, meetings as well as email support in between meetings, are included.

What is the coaching relationship like?

LifeCoachMTL Coaching uses a tested and proven process and methodology with clients in order to empower, support and challenge them. However, each interaction is customized to the coachee and to what is going on at that given time in their life. The process offers the flexibility to meet the coachee where they are and moving forward from that point.

What does the coaching process look like?
The coaching process is about opening up choice, awareness, and dynamic, meaningful and intentional movement – all in the service of the coachee finding their balance, strengths and goals – and from that place, creating success as defined by them. The client is always in focus, not their circumstances.
What is the coach’s role?
The coach serves as an objective and non-judgmental sounding board that engages listening, inquiry, feedback (rather than advice), empowerment, challenge, support and accountability to help their clients learn, grow and reach successful results much faster. A coach helps the client through self-discovery and to define a plan and appropriate actions to reach the outlined goals and sets up appropriate follow up steps and accountability throughout the process.
You can expect your coach to:
- Hold and support your vision and goals and to provide structure that helps you in making conscious choices and movement
- Challenge you to step beyond your present limitations and hold you accountable to your goals
- Be an objective, non-judgmental and active listener
- Tell the truth and give you straight feedback. Mia is confrontational; instead she will invite you to look at yourself, your relationships and your choices differently

Step 1 – Intake / Discovery session:
In the first call or meeting, after deciding to work together, the following will be outlined:
- What is truly important to you
- Your priorities and goals
- The results/outcomes you seek
- What opportunities and challenges you are facing
- The logistics and practical details of the relationship
This is your opportunity to train with LifeCoachMTL on who you are and discover how to most effectively work together. Spending this time together will help create the foundation and make the time together more efficient moving forward.
Step 2 – Continuous, regular coaching sessions
After the Intake session, the coach will continuously facilitate self-discovery, awareness and choice, help define goals and powerful actions, challenge, champion and support the client through the process. An important piece, which is unique to this type of learning process, is the aspect of accountability to stay on track.
The meetings can take place face to face when possible or over phone/Skype.
Once you decide you want to start up regular coaching, you will agree on the terms, frequency, and details of the coaching relationship.
The first coaching session the “Discovery session”, looks a little different from the ones to follow. This is usually a longer meeting (90 minutes) and it serves as the foundation and kick-start of the coaching relationship. You will be sent a multi page document to fill out and send back, a few days before your scheduled call or meeting. You will then go over it with your coach and also be able to bring up any other questions or give input that might be essential and important to the ongoing relationship to make sure your coach can serve you as best as possible.
After the “Discovery session” you will schedule your next few upcoming calls. LifeCoachMTL Coaching normally asks for a minimum commitment of two months.
Why is there a minimum time commitment?
Coaching is a process of change and growth. And change is often times gradual and does not always happen over night. There will be times when the client takes big leaps in their learning and development and sometimes set backs or situations of trial and error, which are all normal and expected. It also takes time to develop new habits, perspectives, thinking patterns and to implement new strategies and actions for long-term learning and growth to set root and establish. Therefore, it is advised to invest in at least two months of coaching to get a better overview or the progress, movement, and results of coaching.
Where do we meet?
Coaching can take place either over the phone, Skype or face-to-face.
How long until I see results of the coaching?
This depends. Some results are almost instant where as others take a long time to achieve and establish. It all depends on what the goals are, what is identified as successful results, and your willingness and efforts towards achieving those results.
For how long do people receive coaching?
LifeCoachMTL Coaching asks for a minimum of two months commitment. It sometimes takes time to identify and then establish new goals, habits, actions, etc. We need to go a bit of a distance before we can look back and see the ground we’ve covered and what has been accomplished in that time. Remember, sometimes there are setbacks, and those are a normal part of the process and sometimes also an important aspect of successful advancement.
How long are the coaching sessions?
The coaching sessions are typically 60 minutes and occur 2-4 times a month. The specific set-up is determined together with the coachee and coach to best suit the client’s needs and circumstances.
What can I expect after each coaching session?
Typically field work / home work will be assigned, which the coach and the client co-design together. There will be a timeline and other structures set up to frame the assignment.
Between coaching sessions the client will have access to the coach via email so should obstacles arise the coach is there to support and help the client get back on track with the assignment.
What is expected of me between coaching session?
Prior to each meeting, the client will be asked to email a preparation form, which will focus on what has happened in the time since the last meeting. It will outline your successes, obstacles and learning, along with what you would like to focus on in the next session. The client brings the agenda; the coach is responsible for holding that agenda.
What is the difference between coaching and therapy?
Commonly it’s said that coaching focuses primarily on the present and the future, while therapy looks more closely at the past and the present. Coaches do not diagnose and treat their clients; they view their clients as whole, resourceful and creative beings, and co-designs plans and ongoing movement together with them. Coaching uses a discovery-based process while therapists commonly use medical models to diagnose and treat their clients. In coaching, clients are given ‘home work’ and accountability between sessions, which is of high importance; this is less common in therapy. Coaches and their clients are often in contact between sessions (to report on accountability steps agreed on, or to communicate ‘wins’ or obstacles for ongoing movement). Coaching can be said to be more action oriented while therapy is more insight oriented.
While we can look at differences between coaching and therapy, there are some similarities. For example, some skills, tools and techniques can be used in both. Often, both look at the whole individual with the objective of helping the client create a better, happier, fuller and more successful life – though perhaps in different ways and with different focus points and tools. There are times when a client may not be ready for coaching and where therapy would be a more valuable route to take.
Although opinions and thoughts on the matter differ to some extent, a well-known article on coaching vs. therapy, written by Patrick Williams, who specializes in teaching coaching skills to therapists, summarizes a commonly accepted description quite well (paraphrased below):
“Therapy deals with dysfunction and trauma. A therapist diagnoses problems and uses their expertise to promote healing. Emotions are viewed as symptoms. Progress involves exploring the past and may be slow and painful. Meanwhile, coaching clients tend to be healthy and looking to upgrade good to great. Coaches don’t diagnose illnesses and healing is not the objective. Emotions are normal. The client and coach are equal partners with focus on the present and future; and progress tends to be quick and enjoyable.”
Are my coaching sessions confidential?
Yes. One exception would be if there is a reporting responsibility from the coach to an organization/client, for example, which would be previously agreed on by all parties involved including the coachee. This is rare, however.
